We walked in, I picked up my coffee, and then we sat down. As I looked around, I became acutely aware that I was the only one in the room. Yes, I mean the only person of color.

Acknowledging that fact didn’t make me feel the need to squirm in my seat. I just sat next to him proudly, and fully participated. However, at the end of it all, as we headed to our car I said, “Babe, I want our family to be surrounded by diversity.”

There was no need for explanation. There was no need for a discussion. He simply nodded his head in understanding – a confirmation that we were on the same page.

This is one of the beautiful things about us. It’s one of the reasons why we are strong. We love diversity. We embrace differences. We have an eclectic lifestyle. It’s evident in our mindsets, our behaviors and our style.

My Afro-Caribbean culture mixed with his Japanese-American heritage creates a daily reality that is truly an amazing thing, and something I would never trade. We derive strength, wisdom and beauty from our different backgrounds. It’s not always effortless but it’s something we celebrate everyday.

What’s your cultural heritage?
