No one is you

And that is your power

The words connected with my soul and I thought, ‘That’s right! No one is like me.”

But then countless webinars, tweets and emails later, I didn’t feel that way. No, I felt like I was a batch of cookie dough that had a flavor, but it wasn’t distinct enough to make an impact.

It was overwhelming.

And that’s sometimes how life gets. Despite the reminders to be yourself, we all get bombarded with countless messages of how we’re supposed to be – whether that is in how we look, feel or act. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Recently, I was sick with the flu and pink eye. For two weeks I was bedridden and blind – I mean like couldn’t see anything. As a creative, I was frustrated. I wanted to go and do things, I wanted to get on my hustle, and I wanted to be connected with those around me but it wasn’t a possibility. So I laid in bed, and just began to think.

I didn’t know where to start. There were actually so many things that I didn’t want to think about. Immigration was one. Business was another. So I returned to the basics – what kind of woman did I want to be.

Surprisingly, that answer was simple. I wanted to be a confident, fulfilled woman.

When I realized my answer, I knew some things had to change. It wasn’t that I had done anything wrong in particular. It was more like I was rushing – I had become obsessed with the success I craved and that had left little room for anything else. Yep, it was time for a change.

I reflected on my Caribbean heritage and, for lack of a better word, how laidback everything was. People were still successful. Women were still multidimensional. Families still existed. Work was still a priority. Yet, from what I remembered, there was a delicate balance – a skill in pursuing dreams and enjoying life. It was Caribbean confidence – that je ne sais quoi that attracted millions of visitors to the dreamy white, sandy beaches.

And that, that right there, was what I wanted my life to reflect.

It’s the beauty of thriving aka, the mindset that “I’ll be ok if….”

It’s a peace that comes with leaving it all in God’s hands and taking each day a step at a time.

It’s the confidence to say, “I don’t need to make sense to you because I humbly and unapologetically love me.”

It’s, as Julian of House of Moruka would say, “Be You, do inspiring things everyday, and make the world a better place.”

So cheers to that!

Cheers to the highs and lows that shape us.

Cheers to the victories we have every day.

Cheers to the moments that we realize how special we are.

Cheers to the tears that strengthened us.

Cheers to the clothes, shoes and purses that make us feel beautiful every day.

Cheers to our confidence!

….Because that is what makes us timeless.
