“I bet this would look great on you!”

Really? I thought, as I turned around to see one of my girlfriends holding a sleek maroon bodycon dress in her hand with a big smile on her face.

“That’s cute,” I said. “I don’t think it’s my style though…but I could definitely see you in it!”

“Ok, I’ll try it on.”

And so our unexpected adventure began.

A Mind-Blowing Dressing Room Experience

Off to the dressing room we went, led by the Buffalo Exchange attendant, and lugging our miscellaneous stylish finds with us.

After she showed us to our respective spaces, we closed the curtains. It was the moment of truth – the ultimate test to see if what we wanted to wear actually looked good on us. You know how this works!

Within fifteen minutes, I had eliminated seventy-five percent of the nine items I had brought into the dressing room. They were either too small to get over my thighs, or, not suitable for the upcoming Spring season. But just as I was about to try on the yellow boho dress I fell in love with, my girlfriend asked me to step outside for a second.

I drew back the curtain and the first few words out of my mouth were, “Whoa!! That’s hot!”

However, despite my excitement, my home girl wasn’t as thrilled.

“The material of this dress feels great but I’m giving major side boob,” she commented. “I’d probably only be able to wear this at home.”

“Aw bummer,” I replied and turned around to reenter my dressing room.

“Maybe you should try it on!”

I stopped dead in my tracks. Not again.

The truth is I wasn’t comfortable with my body and this was a sleek bodycon dress. I was pretty sure it would show every inch of my insecurities.

Sensing my hesitation, she said, “Just try it. You never know.”

“Ok, girl,” I said with a nervous chuckle, “I’ll give it a shot.”

She undressed and then tossed the maroon bodycon dress to me. I caught it and slipped it on. It fit like a glove.

I couldn’t believe it. It fit.

And not just in size. It actually made me look good.

I bought it that day without any hesitation.

The Insanely Simple Shopping Tip That I Learned

A few months later, I still remember that dressing room experience in Buffalo Exchange. It was so unexpected.

When I look back, I was so convinced by my fear of the bodycon dress, that I kept refusing to give it a chance. I tried to pawn it off on my friend, avoiding having to try it on at all costs. But luckily, as fate would have it, I ended up trying it on anyway!

And thank God I did!

Yes, now I have a stunning and jaw-dropping dress in my wardrobe but, more importantly, I was reminded of an insanely simple shopping tip:

Trying things on that you never thought you would wear can turn into the most exciting and freeing style moments.

There’s nothing more to it.

So next time you head out with your girls (or by yourself) to the mall, don’t sell yourself short. Adopt this course of action from Vera Wang – “Just go in and try things on…things you may even think I would never wear that. Give yourself that freedom.”

Thanks Girl, But What About Some Photos of You In That Bodycon Dress?

I thought you’d never ask!

I recently wore this dress to a Haitian baby shower that I attended with bae and a few friends. And I must say that I felt absolutely amazing in it!!
